Whitt's Review - Disney Channel's "Princess Protection Program"

Disney Channel presented their newest original movie on June 26. "Princess Protection Program" follows the story of Carter (Selena Gomez) - whose father is an agent for PPP, which stands for Princess Protection Program. Demi Lavato stars as Princess Rosalinda, who is rescued from her country, Costa Luna, after an evil dictator attacks the royal throne. Lavato convincingly portrays the character, and I was very impressed to see her in a different type of role. On the other hand, Gomez plays the typical teen, which is not any different than what we've seen her play before. As the movie progresses, Princess Rosalinda disguises herself as a normal American teen, as order of the PPP. She then moves in with Carter and her father for safety, thinking that a rural Louisana home would be the last place the evil dictator, Magnus Kane, would ever look to find her. I found that Magnus Kane was not a convincing villain. He seemed too silly and stupid to be afraid of. Carter and Rosalinda, now disguised as Rosie, start off on the wrong foot, but eventually become BFFs! Very predictable! The movie also revolves around the idea of a homecoming queen at the high school the girls attend. I was bothered by the fact that masquerade masks were involved, for we've seen Selena in another movie ("Another Cinderella Story") involving a masquerade party. Lavato's character wound up in and incedent involving an overflowing yogurt machine... Selena was involved with the same situation on an episode of "Wizards of Waverly Place" in the show's first season. The climax of the movie was very disappointing, but what can you expect. I was very pleased with Disney Channel's last original movie, "Hatching Pete"- but I wasn't so crazy about this one. I can recommend it to kids and perhaps fans of Gomez and Lavato, but as for anyone else... SKIP IT!

  1. It sounds so ridiculous. This is going to be one of those projects that everyone involved looks back on with shame in a few years.
